  • foundation repair

    Hello,

I have an old home (built in 1920's). The outside of the foundation is deteriating is some spots. Mold/Moss has formed and grown. I just used a mixture of bleach and water and a scrub brush to clean it off and then rinsed.

How do I go about repair and then repainting? What materials do I need? I am also concerned about the gap between the driveway and foundation. I used the caulking gun last summer to fill it in (cement) but it seems to have widened. This issue is also in the same area.

    I appreciate any help!

    Thank You!

is your foundation - concrete block? bricks? stone foundation?
If any of the above, lime is dissolving out of the concrete joints making a sort of chalky powder that washes off. Unfortunately its also undermining the integrity of the concrete holding everything together.
Use a wire or stout nail and scrape out what loose mortar you can get out. Then make a mix about the consistency of peanut butter of three parts sand, one part portland cement and force into the groove. pack it in as hard as you can and trowel smooth. then finish as you want.
