We have a area when drainage is poor. Had a professional estimate to dig a trench and install a 4" black flexible tube and run it 50 feet to the front yard to a pop up drain. He wanted $1000. We are thinking about doing this ourselves since it will be hand dug anyway. Our neighbors just had this done and did pay $1000. How deep should we dig the trench? We want to tie in one gutter to this - they wanted more $$$ to do this an extra $165. Is this a french drain? Or what is this called? Anyone give advice on how to do this - we figure basically all involved in very little money in materials but a lot of sweat equity.

Absolutely, DIY. if you do a GOOGLE SEARCH on installing french drains or french drains , you'll find links to differnt sites that will show you different approaches to installing a french drain....I am in the process of doing the same thing......dig a trench about 12"-16" deep and about 6" wide with a little grade. add alittle drainage gravel along the length of the trench, slip the drainage cloth / sleeve over the 3" or 4" perforated drain pipe (holes down), and lay your pipe in the trench..backfill with additional gavel....either fill with gravel to ground/grass level if you want to take care of ground water and then hide or disguise gravel trench with stepping stones or fill trench with gravel 3-4" from ground level and then back fill with soil and add grass or sod....THE OTHER OPTION I FOUND is the www.americanwick.com system I found at LOWES......HAS ANYONE HAD ANY EXPErience with this product?
