Weird thing we dug up

Does anyone know what this thing is? We dug it up out of the back yard. It was sticking out about halfway to start with and had a threaded hole in the top. It looked kind of like an ashtray. It also has a few threaded holes in the bottom.

It looks like an old fashioned acetylene tank for a welder, pre 1940.

Its the bottom part of an old water heater circa 1940's

Looks to be the expansion tank of a hot water heating system for the house.
