  • Basement finishing

    Good morning,

Does anyone out there have a learned opinion regarding finishing the basement with vapor barrier on the concrete floor with treated lumber sleepers and a plywood sub versus 1" rigid styrofoam panels laid directly upon the concrete, taped together then a plywood sub-floor screwed down with cement screws. I just recently read of the latter and have mixed feelings considering the foam might crush in areas causing the floor to eventually squeak, etc...

I have a small section of concrete in MY house where I put in a wood floor. What I did was lay down poly directly on the concrete with construction adhesive. Then came pressure treated 2x4 flat side down 16 on centers. Where I ramsetted nails through the 2x4 to the concrete, on the opposite side I put a little silicone goo and sent the nail on through. Between the "studs" I used styrofoam and foam in insulation. Then on top of this I used more poly and finally 3/4 plywood as a subfloor. On top of this I used rosin paper and finally the finish oak flooring.

I've seen that rosin in the store, what's the reasoning for using that?

There is a simple moisture test that flooring guys do. They have a name for it but i can't recall what they call it. lay a rubber matt on the floor and let it sit a couple days, then lift the matt and see if the floor is moist under the matt. It it is still dry you dont require a moisture barrier.

The rosin paper acts as a cushion
