  • Installing Tile on Cement

    Hi,
    I have a question.
I am in the process of finishing my basement and I am now thinking about installing the flooring. I have a cement floor and want to install ceramic tile on it. I do not know what to use as a subfloor, if any. What should I use between the cement and the tile in order to be sure that it does not have any chance of cracking in the future?

    Thank,
    Brent

A paint-on membrane like RedGard is good.

Tile craking is a result of flexing in the subfloor, which explains why they recommend concrete backerboard over wood subfloors. A poured concrete subfloor is about as rigid as it gets, so there is no real danger of the tile cracking when laid over concrete.
