  • Gibson furnace flame out

Just signed up to try and get some answers to my problem here:

Here's the deal, I have a 5 year old he Gibson furnace made by Nordyne. Here is what it is doing and what I have done to try to fix the problem:

    Calls for heat
    Induction fan runs
    Igniter glows
    Gas valve turns on
One or two of the six burners light for 3 sec. and then it shuts off
Induction fan continues to run and it cycles 4-5 times before shutting down and red light blinks 4 times to say that ignition problem. Once in a great while it may light on it's own but it's very hit or miss.
I have cleaned out the burner area and cleaned all the orifices. Here's the tricky part, if I hold my hand over the induction inlet just before it lights and quickly take my hand away before it detects no air flow, it will light. It may stay lite through the whole heating cycle or the flames stop part way through the cycle. There is no pipe going to the outside, the induction inlet pulls air from basement (why they did it this way is beyond me). Any ideas??

    Thanks,

    Tim

I've seen this before, you should add a piece of pvc pipe (usually 2") up about 3 feet and then put a 90 degree elbow on it. That should take care of your problem. But you should really vent the pipe outside. What you have isn't technically against code, but it is making your furnace less efficient. Good luck.

Left of the exhaust is where the intake is located. Restricting the air flow allows the furnace to fully fire. I am going to try the above mentioned 3 foot pipe to see if that helps. I will eventually vent it to the outside of the house but for time being just want to see if that is an easy fix.
