  • Compressor Replacement?

Our A/C apparently became frozen yesterday. We kept the unit off overnight as the repair person recommended and they came out today to diagnose the problem. We've been told that the compressor is leaking freon and that we will have to get it replaced. Is this possible with a unit that is only 6 years old (Carrier model 38BRC060320). Can the leak just be fixed? I've been given a replacement quote (Trane 2TTR2060) for $2700.

I would suggest you get other quotes/bids for the replacement if necessary. A leak anywhere in the freon circuit will result in the loss of freon and the unit to freeze. You could have a leak at a fitting or in a line. A competent repair serviceman should have a detector to determine where the problem is.

You might investigate having just the compressor replaced.

Either way be sure you get a freon dryer installed.

It would depend a lot on the nature of the leak. If the leak is just within the piping there should be no reason the leak could not be fixed, however, If the compressor iced up as you say, there is a very strong liklihood that the compressor repeatedly tried to start, thus overheating the electrical terminal block on the compressor housing. Often the terminal blocks blow out entirely while in other cases one or more of the terminal get hot, slighty melt the insuling material and form a leak. If the leak is in fact at the electrical terminals there is little one can do other than to replace the compressor.

Get 3 bids for the job for sure. 6 years old compressor cant cost $2700 to replace it .If it is the compressor you can just replace it is all not the whole unit???[:0]
