  • cover for a/c unit

I wasnt given a protective cover, to cover my central air unit outside. Now living in Canada, it tends to drop to -30 celsius. I called the guy I dealt with and he said he doesnt sell covers. The best thing for me to do is put a piece of plywood on the top to cover the fan area, and put a cinderblock on top of that to keep it in place. My question is....is this guy telling the truth or is this a bad idea?

No that is one way to keep the snow and ice out of it if its not a heat pump. lots of people down here do it that way every year. He is just saveing you $$$$$ is all. Id use him for my service all the time

Actually I believe his idea to use the plywood is great. The units are deesigned to be weather resistant so all you really require is a basic top to keep leaves and trash as well as snow out of it.

fitting a vinyl cover or plastic over the whole unit would tend to trap condensate which would increase the corrosion effects.
