Central AC Installation

I have a basic knowledge of electricity and running ductwork and such. How hard is to install a unit with the basics?

This is for a garage appartment. It is one romm except for the bathroom.

If you intend to install a self contained package unit it is not difficult, but if you are planning to install a split system with separate evaporator and condenser you would have to posses a currently valid EPA refrigerant handlers certificate. Transporting or dispensing refrigerants without a valid EPA certificate and proper recovery equipment on site can result in fines of $10,000 or more.

Might be best to just go with a through the wall unit for heat and cool. If your not EPA

What if I order a split unit and have it delivered? I have seen where you can order them precharged.

Almost all units come with a precharge, but that is primarily to insure no moisture can get into the systems. Whether they are precharged or not, split systems still require a bit of top charging and final pressure adjustment to compensate for length of line runs and static head variation. Failure to properly top charge or final adjust the refrigerant pressures can result in severe icing and serious damage to the unit.

Because refrigerant pressures are affected by ambient temperatures proper training is required to determine what the pressures should be based upon the conditions at the time the test is being performed.

About 10 years ago I installed a Lennox Central air unit. (A-coil in furnace plenum and condenser unit outside). It previously had only a furnace.

After I put it in, I called out a serivceman to evacuate and charge the system. It was not too expensive. I do have basic electical, code and motor control training.

It is not too difficult, but make sure you know your local building codes about disconnects, wire size, conduit, and such.
