heat pumps

I am building a new house and my contractor installed two carrier air handlers inside and two bryant heat pumps outside. Should I be concerned with this?? I would have thought that I would want the units to match?

It is common to match them simply because you buy it as a complete system, but there is no requirement for the condensing unit to be the same brand as the evaporator. The only critical part is that they must match in tonnage.

Each component relies upon the other to work, but in reality they are both self contained to perform there part of the task. The only interconnection betweent the two components is the refrigerant lines, and so long each component performs its task correctly, the pressures will be correct to the other component.

Think of it as a car and trailer. The car doesnt know if its utility trailer, camper or a boat trailer, and the trailer doesnt know whether its a car or a pickup truck, but when connected together they both perform well.

Taking it a step further, irrespective of what brand name is on the package, in all probability they both contain the same internal parts, by example, while the condensing unit may be a Carrier, Bryant, Trane, Rheem, etc etc, in all probability they all have the same Tecumseh or Copeland compressor.

Yes they will work. BUT its better to have them both the same for sure. That is how they are tested and get their SEER and HSPF rating for the heat pump . Here you dont know what you have.

Thanks for the reply. Can you provide any links to documents that can back that up? I would like to have something to show the contractor if I try to force him to change the units.

I dont have paper work on them as for as SEER and HSPF ## to help you.But Id call the company's and ask Carrier and Bryant about this and if it does anything as to the warranty on there parts.
