ok- I'll give it a try..especially since there is not a chance in hell of getting anyone here to repair/check it for awhile yet..we have 3 feet of snow here in the so. cal. mountains, and it's still coming down. This is my first winter alone here, and I wasn't quite prepared with one broken wall heater and soaking wet firewood now covered by several feet of snow.
It's a standing pilot heater- pilot light stays lit, but fan doesn't come on and "whoosh" doesn't happen. Had someone look at it a few weeks ago, he said new thermostat. Bought and installed new thermostat..no change. When I went to look at heater side of wiring, discovered wiring (only 2 wires) was totally disconnected at heater..so thermostat was likely not the problem. Talked to ex, he doesn't know why wiring was disconnected (?) so no help there. He does say this heater doesn't need electricity to run.
I know almost nothing, but am willing to learn and try..and have lots of time. thanks for any help offered.

Locknest,
You stated in your post that your ex says the heater will work without power. Based upon that statement I beleive that perhaps you have not just one, but rather, two problems.
A lot would depend upon the type of gas control and thermostat arrangement, but there are some heaters that will operate as a common gas burner, and the fan is an accessory.
Without knowing precisely what those disconnected wires are for it would be impossible to recommend hooking them to anything. By example, we certainly wouldn't want to connect low voltage control wires to house power.
Somewhere on that unit there should be a removable service access panel, and most likely there is a printed wiring schematic and component layout on the backside of that cover. If you happen to have a digital camera and could possibly take a picture of that wiring diagram so that we could see the schematic we should be able to help you resolve the problem.
The schematic should be fairly simply so if you dont have a camera you might draw the diagram on a paper and scan it, to post for us to work from.
