  • Insulating ductwork in a crawlspace...ED!...more

First of all...Ed, You mentioned a spray for filters on a furnace in a post long ago."There are spray's that you can but on the filters when you put them in. It helps." Got a brand and are they available in one of my local building centers or just through a plumbing supply store.
The second question and the reason I'm back here (God I love this site), I finally broke down and had a new Ruud furnace installed and chucked that old Sears piece of junk. Got tired of tweaking the thing.
Now that the price of gas is going to go sky high,I'm wondering about the ductwork in my crawlspace. Some of it has bunt style insulation wrapped around it but the majority is not insulated.I have begun to put sheet isulation around it but wanted to get your opinions on this action before I continue the job. Is it nessesary to insulate and will it make a difference in heat loss? Thanks in advance for a reply.

OK crawl space. go to http://aboutsavingheat.com/crawlspace.html

Now we put down a 6 mil poly on the ground there over lap it 2 ft. tape all seams. On the walls a 2"or3" polystyrene. From ground to the joist. Cut like a block of R19 insulation paper to the crawl. Put them in each joist space up on the sill all around the home. Be sure and seal all vents. No insulation up in the joist at all. Or on the duct work . we use metal duct and do put one or two registers in the duct work and a small return down there. To let heat and cool out down there. It works like a heat sink for you. Any homes we have reworked like this .The fuel cost has gone down.

For the spray Home Depot and lowes here have them. There is a PURA Clean spray. go http://www.purecleanspray.com and check it out

I am not sure what spray you are talking about, but if you are putting spray on your filter you better make sure you start checking your filter about every 15 days or so. The spray, from what I have seen, is effective, but causes alot of problems on the a/c side of a system.

Have used it for years. Just a very light coat on the intake side is all. Sure beats the H*** out of cleaning the AC coil all the time. I have my guys put it on a new filter when they put one in .On a service call. And we dont put in a filter over a MERV 5
