  • Gas shutoff valve question

    Hi everyone,

Is it acceptable to use a standard brass ball valve on an indoor natural gas line, or does it need to be specifically rated for gas use? Also, are there any markings or standards I should check to confirm it’s approved for gas service?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi there! You're right to double-check this. Not all brass ball valves are safe for gas. For natural gas lines, the valve should be specifically rated for gas use. Even if it looks the same, a regular valve might not seal properly or hold up over time, which could lead to a dangerous leak.

To be sure it's approved, look for markings like "CSA" or "AGA" on the valve. These show that it's been tested and certified for gas service. Sometimes the packaging or product listing will also say something like "gas rated" or "suitable for natural gas."

It’s always better to use the right part and play it safe when working with gas lines.

Thanks! Would a gas-rated valve also have a pressure rating marked on it?

You're welcome! Yes, most gas-rated valves will have a pressure rating printed on them. You’ll often see something like "600 WOG" on the side. That just means it’s rated for 600 PSI and can be used with water, oil, or gas, as long as it’s not for steam.

WOG is mostly used in the U.S. and in places that follow American plumbing standards. In other countries, they might use different markings like "PN" or labels like "CE" or "EN 331" when something is rated for gas.

If you're in the U.S., the main thing to look for on a valve for natural gas is a marking like "CSA" or "AGA." That tells you it’s been tested and approved for gas use. If the valve doesn’t mention gas anywhere, it’s safer to avoid using it on a gas line.
