It very well may be a PVC shower pan and if so it is probably glued to the drain.
If it is on a second floor, above a basement or crawl space you can get under it, cut the pipe, then make up a new piece of line to the new shower pan. If you are on a concrete slab it is a bit more involved and somwhat risky, but you can carefully cut the drain straight down with a mini hacksaw, making two or three cuts, then carefully chisel the drain line out of the collar on the pipe below. It is a very tedious task and if your luck is like mine, murphy's law will surely invoke terror here.

Thanks for the reply. My realproblem is I think everything has to have a procedure written out somewhere and done with finesse. well, finesse went out the *&^%#^% window last night. I took out the biggest hammer I could find and beat the living SHIFT out of it and it didn't resist. So now I can begin framing.

It's sometimes better to be lucky than smart.
