  • Drywall over plaster WALLS

I already remodeled my kitchen over a year ago. I stripped the 125 year old plaster right down to the lathe, removed the lathe boards and then drywalled.

I am now remodeling my bedroom. Thank goodness only two opposing walls have plaster. The plaster is in excellent condition except for a few spots. It is smooth as butter...but I hate it and it's going to be removed.

I have read so many viewpoints about just installing drywall over the plaster and there are so many different views. If I get long enough screws, can I just simply install the drywall over the almost perfect plaster? I will have to get two inch screws I guess. The electrical wires are not in this wall so I have nothing to worry about behind the plaster. After my kitchen (which took almost 2 weeks to remove the plaster), I do not want to remove more plaster. What a mess.

Will the lathe board be able to support the newly hung drywall in case I miss the stud? Please say yes....please please please. I don't want to be bothered with the removal of plaster again. UGH!!!

You could install 1/4" drywall over the plaster on the walls, but the added thickness of the drywall will extend out further on all of your door and window trim, it will also extend out at the bottom so baseboards will be attached 1/4" further into the room covering the flooring that much more. If you decide to go this route then use a stud finder to find all the studs, draw a mark out on the floor indicating the center line of each stud, position your drywall on the wall, tack it up with a couple of screws, then using a straight edge and a level draw a line on the drywall indicating the studs, then screw into the studs as the lath will not provide a secure surface.
