protection for exterior brickwork

Hi, I am helping a friend with some work and we are trying to get some advice on what to use to protect brickwork from the elements. We get a lot of rain, so moisture can be a problem. He has used Thompson's, but it doesn't hold up.

thompson's is good for wood not masonary. thoroseal might be a better option, dry brick will soak up this stuff like a sponge and form a protective barrier. I think it comes in colors and looks like a colored whitewash when it's applied.

Got some advice that says bricks really don't need any protection from the elements and it make some sense to me. Now my follow-up question, what about the mortar? If it needs protection, what should we use?\

cured mortar doesn't need protection. if the existing mortar joints are crumbling out then major "pointing up" is necessary. sakrete or quikcrete mortar mix is what you want.
