Well, for a start the two pieces your showing should be attached, but if talking about the black grate part, it looks like a firm fit from your pictures however if it is loose also wrap some duct tape around the entire exterior perimeter, just enough to fill the gap between vent and register.

Thanks. It is the white metal top piece that is the problem. PUSHKINS is correct but by rights the side holes should be screwed into the wood. the fit should be an interference fit. sumbody was a little careless when he cut the vent opening. what you might try is cutting [drilling] a hole in the ends of the register and use a small countersink and use flat top sheet metal screws into the wood. paint the screws a matching white.
