Whole house dehumidfier

Hello, I have been looking into a whole house dehumidifier. I see that you basically hook this up through the HVAC unit. My question is, if this is hooked up in the basement and there are no AC vents in the basement, would one of these units dehumidify the basement as well, or would a portable unit be required also?

If there are no registers in the basement, how do you expect the airflow to get back to the condenser where the moisture is removed?

Right that is what I was thinking. Didn't know if the system came with some kind of register.
