  • Heat Pump Troubleshooting

A heat pump unit has no electric heaters and related thermostats. Homeowner reports that the unit seems to run constantly in the heating mode, but the conditioned space is not adequately heated. The temperature is around 40F outside, so the heat pump should be able to handle the heating load. When you arrive at the site, you find that there is a signifiant frost buildup on the outdoor coil. How would you proceed to diagnoise the problem and fix the unit? Please, if you could outline the steps for the vaious restrictions that might be with this unit.
    Thank you.

Like said call a hvac tech here. Sounds like the defrost board can be bad or the 4 way valve . Turn it to cool and see what you get. Should take the ice right off outdoor coil.
