  • bryant 90+ model 398 aaw (or AAV cant remember)

    Hi there,

Well yet another year where my bryant plus 90, model 398 AAV (or is it AAW, im at work and cant remember) fails.

Its been a yearly thing. this past year the drain pipe clogged and the water over flowed and shorted out the control board (interesting place they located it).

this time however itssomething new. I turned it on for the year, brand spankin new filter, some clean up, but i didnt do anything extensive.

So, now it has failed again. When I cycle the power, the thermostat is asking for heat, the flame comes on and burns for a while, but I think when it gets ready to start the big blower, the whole thing shuts down.

The LED is flashing 3 shorts and 3 longs, but , THERE IS NO FAULT CODE TABLE ANYWHERE! ugh. Not on either fof the front panels, or in the control compartment and not in the manuals. So I have no idea what it is complaing about. Bryants website is totally unhelpful here as it only supplies the user docs that also dont have the table i need.

I have been recently been told this is a code 33. what doe sthis mean, how do I fix it and how to i prevent it in the future?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im pretty tired of shelling out 200 bucks every year for this "low maintenance" furnace. . I am pretty technically oriented, so I would be comfortable replacing pretty much anything in it.
    - im cold and coldness makes me uncreative

You have a safety switch that is bad - I just got off the phone with carrier(produces bryant equipment) that is what a 33 code is. I would have to have my hands on the unit to know exactly what all switches you have, but follow the power and you will find out.

      I think I agree...

First I tried to reset the only switch i could find, the one on the burner box, left side, but the reset button didnt move in or anyting. It didnt feel like that was it.

I followed the directions, Let me just detail it here:

I disconnected the thermostat and no code flashed
I reconnected the thermostat and ran the furnace: same deal
burners come on for a few minutes then code 33
I probed the only switch i could find (its attached to the burner box, left side), there was 24VAC on both terminals.

Then the directions (which someone kindly sent to me which had step by step diagnostics for error code 33) asked me about the draft safeguard switch which I am unsure of it location. Im assuming that it is the correct one since it is the original one and it has not been replaced and has worked till now.

I checked that the inflow and outflow vents had draft. Both PVC tubes seem to allow air to flow well.

So im at this draft safeguard switch which it recommends to replace. Any idea where this is?

There should be another switch located on the blower section and then at least one more somewhere. Could be the pressure switch (this could be what they are calling a draft safeguard),which is connected to the combustion motor. There should be a small vinyl tube and a couple of wires that comes off of it.

huh... There definitely IS a pressure switch, I see a tube from the combustion box to the output of the vent blower. It is also right under a place where I see water dripping (condensation in the exit pipe seems to be finding its way through the rubber coupling - i'll fix that too)..

          Thanks a bunch!

ill report back if that was the problem.

            UGH...

well that switch WAS broken, but it still did not solve my problem. Still get code 33. Still turns off the system after the burner starts and the vent blower comes on. Seems to hit code 33 when the big air mover is supposed to come on.

            Any other suggestions?

              ok this is crazy...

here is an image of ym furnace

I have found only two switches, the one in the upper left, switch 1, which i think is the flame something or other switch. The reset was not popped out, I tried to reset it. Nothing.

I replaced the bad pressure switch pointed to by the blue arrow. But I still get code 33. I just dont see any other switches. Ntohing has changed. Blower comes on, flame on, a few minutes, all off with code 33.
              Vent is not blocked.
              Filter is clean.

              what am I missing?
