I would like to know how to check the freon level in a 23 year old rheem air conditioner .

what do you know about air conditioners or refrigeration in general? better question is "are you EPA certified?" Without the EPA certification you can't do anything with a freon charged system.

If you are a home owner and you don't have the gages and know how to use them then the only thing you can check is the temps. Check the air temp entering the indoor coil and the temp on the out going side of the coil. Depending on factors like blower speed and clean coil, you will get between 12 and 18 degrees temp. drop across the coil. The outside coil will have about 13 degrees
drop across the coil. Later Paul
