I live in a rather new (2000) manufactured Home and want to replace the analog manual setting thermostat with a programable type. The house has a Coleman Evcon Electric Furnace and a heat pump. The local hardware store says that any of the available models should work but I am concerned about the voltage they use. Is there anything I should look for before buying an thermostat or are they almost universal. Any and all comments would be appreciated. Brands better than others? Pitfalls?

"Universal" is not a word that should be associated with thermostats. Some will work on "many" systems. You have a heat pump. Need to know if it is a single stage or 2 stage heat pump. Need to know whether or not your system has auto-changeover. A good HVAC supply house can match your existing stat to one that has the proper specs. Robertshaw, Honeywell, White-Rodgers, and Lux all have good websites, but you need to know what you are looking for.
